This Pride Month, 2(X)IST is celebrating individuality and self-expression through the stories of its Spotlight campaign participants. These narratives highlight the unique journeys within the LGBTQIA+ community, reinforcing the brand's dedication to universal existence and confidence.
Our next featured talent is Matt, a dynamic musician from New York. Matt brings a vibrant energy both on and off the stage. “How do I take the spotlight in my life? Well, I’m a musician, so when I’m on stage performing my music it kind of falls on me. If we’re raving, we’re in very chic outfits rocking out,” he explains with a confident grin.
Embracing Identity: A Q&A with Matt
Q: What does Pride mean to you?
Matt: Gratitude that I get to live my life the way I do with the people I do. I started making art when I was young and came out when I was even younger. It was such an insane journey to get to this point in my life and I have no doubt it will continue to be. There will never be the right words to describe it on paper, you'd just have to be there. It's crucial to recognize that Pride holds varying definitions depending on who you're talking to and their experiences. It's not always crystal clear and it's not always easy to define. When I think of Pride I think of how much I love my friends. We are all artists with our own distinct styles trying to break glass ceilings in this world. There is so much beauty in that. We live life in a fearless way and I'm grateful for that. I wouldn't be who I am today without them.
Q: When did you first hear about 2(X)IST?
Matt: When I was asked to do this campaign, which surprised a few of my friends! I've usually got my finger on the pulse, but I suppose there's always something new to learn. I've since discovered that I've actually owned a pair of 2(X)IST underwear for a while (do not know where they came from) and they're quite comfortable.
Q: Why did you choose to be a part of this 2(X)IST campaign?
Matt: Some may say I love attention; I'd agree wholeheartedly with them. Being in front of a camera is part of the work I do, so I'll always take the opportunity to exercise that muscle, especially if the brand seems different from my usual taste. That's fun to me. I'll never pass on a bit of fun or a new experience. Also, one of my close friends who I trust with my heart had worked a bit with the team and briefed me that they are all lovely people, which I found to be true.
Q: When was your first time taking the spotlight? How did you embrace everything that came along with it?
Matt: When I was much younger and started doing music. I've been involved in the NYC music scene since my early teen years, and it shaped the person I am today. I used to throw underground shows and raves with my friends, which were all formative experiences to me in their own, intricate ways, regardless of genre. Then, when I started writing and releasing my own music a while back, I quite literally took the spotlight in a way I never had before. I've been singing since I could talk, but embracing my artistry in a way that felt like I was expanding upon a universe of my own making felt exhilarating. It still does, even more so now that I'm older and sober. That's why I am still pursuing music and don't plan on ever pivoting to anything else. Through playing shows and everything creative that comes with releasing new work, I am in an endless cycle of embrace.
Matt’s story is a vivid illustration of how passion and community can shape and define one’s identity. From his early days in the NYC music scene to his current endeavors, Matt embodies the spirit of creativity and fearlessness. At 2(X)IST, we are thrilled to have Matt as part of our Spotlight campaign, showcasing the dynamic and resilient nature of our community.
Through the stories of our talents—Clayton, Perish, Anthony, Neal, and Matt—2(X)IST continues to inspire confidence and a sense of belonging. Here’s to standing tall, shining bright, and embracing our true selves with pride.
